Following a long career in public administration in Texas, mostly as an election official, I now write full time, often op-eds and essays about Texas history and events. My novel, The Edge of Freedom, was published by Inkwater Press in February 2011. Please visit the publisher's site for the book at http://edgeoffreedom.net to see reviews, discussion questions, and a full media kit. The novel is about the Texas Revolution of 1836.

I am a contributing writer for the History News Network http://hnn.us/ where my articles on higher education and historical issues are usually related to Texas. My education includes a BA, with honors, in history from the University of Texas at Austin, and an MA in social and intellectual history, minor in higher education and journalism, from UT-Austin. Before my career in public administration, I was the managing editor of a national medical magazine and a daily newspaper reporter, covering the police and courthouse beats. In addition to many articles for the History News Network, I have also contributed to the Texas Observer, Religion Dispatches, and the San Antonio Express-News. I was the guest author at the 175th anniversary and historical re-enactment of the Goliad battle of the Texas Revolution.

I now divide my time between Portland, Oregon, and Austin, Texas.
